Since 2003 until its recent closing, Jim Sheffield, had been the Clinic Director of the Nix Health Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine facility. “We were terribly sad to see the Nix close. It holds so much history and we have so many memories of the patients we met there and were able to help heal. We have treated a huge variety of conditions, including chronic wounds that would have resulted in amputation without treatment. We are excited to invite our patients to our new clinic, Optimal Healing Wound Care & Hyperbarics, at our beautiful, state of the art facility, conveniently located in the San Antonio medical center. We look forward to seeing our patients – old and new – and continuing our mission of helping people heal.”

In addition to working as Program Director,Jim Sheffield and the Sheffield family are founders of International ATMO which, for over 40 years, has been the premier provider of hyperbaric medicine management, consulting and education worldwide.

Medical Director

Dr. Shirani, Medical Director of Optimal Healing Wound Care & Hyperbarics, received his MBBS from Nishtar Medical College in Pakistan; his MBA from University of Phoenix, AZ; his MS from Wright State University, OH; and his MD from State University of New York.  Dr Shirani served on active duty as a surgeon in the US Army Medical Corps at Brooke Army Medical Center for 23 years and retired in the grade of Colonel. Since his military retirement, he served for 4 years as Director of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) facility located at the Foundation Surgical Hospital of San Antonio, and most recently served as Medical Director of the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center at the Nix Hospital in downtown San Antonio.

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Consultant

Dr. Almaquer, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Consultant for Optimal Healing Wound Care & Hyperbarics, received his Undergraduate Degree from Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, his Bachelor of Medical Science from Dartmouth Medical School, Hanover, N.H., Surgical Internship from University of Texas Health Science Center at Parkland Hospital, Dallas, TX, and General Surgery Residencies from both University of Texas Medical Branch, John Seally Hospital, Galveston, TX, and from Mount Sinai Medical Center of Chicago, Chicago Ill. He completed his Residency in Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX.

Dr. Almaguer has extensive presenting and teaching experience. For over 30 years, he has specialized in Wound Care and General Plastic Surgery, including Micro Surgery. He has specialized in Hand Surgery for over 20 years. Since 2006, he has specialized in Hyperbaric Medicine, and provided wound care and surgical support at the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center at the Nix Hospital in Downtown San Antonio.

Dr. Almaguer is fluent in both English and Spanish.
